What is Louisiana Camp Joshua?

LCJ Logo

Louisiana Camp Joshua (LCJ), a weekend pro-life camp to train high school students to be pro-life leaders, was started in 2008 by the Knights of Columbus, Louisiana Right to Life, and Louisiana Students for Life.  The first LCJ was held in Baton Rouge in the spring of 2008.

Camp Joshua has formed over 350 new pro-life leaders, and these LCJ graduates have already formed new pro-life efforts in their high school and community, and many have moved on to college and started critical pro-life efforts.

After LCJ 2009 tripled the attendance of LCJ 2008 (to our capacity of 90 students!), Louisiana Camp Joshua expanded in 2010 to include two LCJ spring camps (the original in Baton Rouge and an additional camp in Lake Charles) and the new Joshua Leadership Institute, an intensive week-long summer program.  In 2011, LCJ in Baton Rouge again reached its capacity, and Joshua Leadership Institute increased its attendance by almost 30%. After the success of these events, LCJ in 2012 will consist of four weekend LCJ spring camps (Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, and "NORTH" in Ruston) and a summer Joshua Leadership Institute.  The LCJ team is already investigating planting a new camp in either the Lafayette or New Orleans area.

Understanding the Theme and Mission

The Lord gave this command to Joshua Son of Nun: Be strong and Courageous, for your will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you."

Deuteronomy 31

Our camp bears the name of Joshua because, just as he transformed character into action, we want the high school students of Louisiana to be formed in their pro-life convictions and able to live them out to others in word and deed.

Character:
Joshua, young understudy of Moses and a hero of the Old Testament, is known for his character. As the quote from Deuteronomy states above, Joshua's character was one of bold strength, wisdom, and courage. LCJ instills in young women and men strength in character, wisdom, and courage to defend and proclaim the message of life.

Action:
Joshua's character had real results. He converted his character and values into action for the greater good. This action was evident in leading his people to the Promised Land and eventually bringing down the walls of Jericho, all at a young age. Just as Joshua brought down the walls of Jericho, the young men and women from Louisiana Camp Joshua will lead their generation to building a culture of life and bringing down the walls of the culture of death.

Mission of Louisiana Camp Joshua
Louisiana Camp Joshua is a weekend camp designed to train high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to be pro-life leaders now and in the future.

Mission of the Joshua Leadership Institute

The Joshua Leadership Institute is a intensive week-long summer program to equip high school and young college students to be the pro-life leaders of today.

Who can attend any of the LCJ events?

Louisiana Camp Joshua weekend events are open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, while the Joshua Leadership Institute is open to rising high school juniors, seniors, and college freshman.  Material is presented from a Christian pro-life perspective, and the event is intended for individuals of all denominational or faith backgrounds.  Speakers at the event come from various Christian denominations.

Note: Louisiana Camp Joshua or the Joshua Leadership Institute are not "bible" camps.  The Old Testament Joshua is used as a model of youth leadership and courage.
