The Louisiana Legislature heard the voices of 14,245 petitions and passed HB 370, placing an effective ban on human cloning in Louisiana.
HB 861, the Umbilical Cord Blood Education Act, passed the Senate by a unanimous margin as well. These bills, taken together, form the "Backing Cures, Banning Cloning" package and send a clear message that, while we are moving forward on ethical finding cures for diseases, the destructive practice of human cloning has no place in the great pro-life state of Louisiana.
Both bills now head to the Governor to be signed into law.
Text of Petition which was signed by 14,245 LA citizens:
To:
Governor Bobby Jindal
Louisiana Senate and Louisiana House of Reresentatives
Whereas: Louisiana currently provides no protection against the life-destroying actions of embryonic stem cell research and human cloning.
Whereas: Since 2004, Louisiana Right to Life Federation, along with other pro-life groups, has encouraged the passage of an authentic human cloning ban bill in the Louisiana Legislature.that bans all forms of human cloning, both for research and reproduction.
Whereas: Certain special interests groups have stood in the way by promoting misleading and ineffective cloning bans that do not protect life.
Whereas: New scientific developments in 2007 have proven that there are ethical approaches to research with great potential, leaving NO reason for the destructive and unsuccessful work of human cloning for embryonic stem cell research to continue.
Therefore: I, a citizen of the state of Louisiana, want to protect human life by embracing ethical cures, not destructive clones. With Louisiana Right to Life Federation and thousands of other pro-life people, I petition the Louisiana Legislature to pass an authentic human cloning ban and Governor Jindal to sign the legislation into law.
